The
evil from Mist Vale seemed to creep out at nights, its fingers slowly
tracing paths further and further into the lands each night. Folks fast
asleep in their beds muttered uneasily as darkness filled their dreams.
Slowly, slowly, the darkness filled the air until one day the lands felt
unusually quiet.
A young lad of Eria was the first to notice. Up before the crack of
dawn to chop wood for his family's fire, he stood outside in the predawn
stillness and stretched his hands high above his head. "Good morning,"
he shouted to the world....but the words stuck in his throat. "Helloooo....?"
The world was silent and his words fell like hammers to the ground,
unspoken and unheard.
Puzzled, he scratched his head, and tried to send a quick mind speak
to his mother... but it seemed as if the words bounced back at him unheard.
Shocked, he raced into the small hovel shrieking at the top of his lungs.
As soon as he entered, his parents bolted wide-awake, leaping up from
the straw pallet. The lad stood there panting in fright, his eyes blinking
rapidly. "Couldn't you hear me screaming outside?" he demanded. His
father, clad only in a short tunic strode outside. He shouted, "Come
out here boy!" Dumbfounded he stood there half naked as his words clogged
in his throat. He poked his head back in the door and said only "What
evilness has betaken us?"
Soon people everywhere tumbled out of their beds and lifted their
voices to the heavens... but it was if the air had become a solid block,
impenetrable and immovable. Where once their joyous and strident voices
had filled the air of the realm, now only an eerie silence reigned.
The Gypsies, far away from the other mortals, listened, amused, to
the distressed calls of the citizens of the land. They shook their heads
as they stroked their seerstones. "It is as we foretold," one said solemnly.
They looked at each other briefly, until one spoke. "Ahh, the foolishness
of the rabbling masses! They do not understand the magic of the stones."
The group chuckled grimly, knowing that, finally, after so many years
in hiding, their power would be revealed.
