Mortal Stories

The Sage

Cyo walked on, looking back every 20 seconds to see what he was leaving behind...His clan hall, his clan deity, and most of all, his Guardians. He walked farther and farther away from the clan hall, contemplating whether he made the right decision or not in leaving his clan. Direction of travel did not matter for him because he felt he had nothing to live for anyway. He continued through Phatep, onto Nercropolis and came across a series of caves. He walked aimlessly into them, not worried about what they might contain. Much to his surprise, there was a small man sitting on the floor meditating by a small fire. Cyo looked to his left and saw a shimmering black dragon. He quickly pulled out his mace, ready for a quick fight because he knew he didn't stand much of a chance. The small man saw Cyo's discomfort with the dragon and snapped his figures and the dragon burst into flames. Cyo blinked repeatedly, not believing what he saw. Cyo knew magic but nothing like this. He then turned his mace, pointing at the back of the man.

"Who the hell are you?" Cyo quickly snapped

"Only ask questions of importance." the man said with his back still turned.

"Fine...What are you?"

"That's more like it. I am what you would call a Sage." Without saying another word, the man snapped his finger again. This time Cyo's mace disappeared.

"You won't be needing that."

Cyo mumbled.

"What brings you here?" asked the man.

"A search for death" Cyo grimly responded.

"Why not the search for a new life?"

"What makes you think I need a new life?"

"Because you're not satisfied with the one you have. Why else would you search for death?"

"So maybe a need a new life...Not like I'm gonna find anything here."

"What makes you so sure?"

"Because you're just some old hermit...what do you know of life out there," Cyo said while pointing out the caves.

"Hmm...maybe I don't know much about 'there'," the man said while pointing out the caves "but I do know I could show you more in 3 months than you have been shown your entire existence."

"Prove it."

The man shrugged and nodded his head.

Within a matter of moments Cyo was staring at the point of a sword that the man conjured from thin air.

"And so it begins!" the man yelled while laughing.

"Why me? Why am I to be your apprentice?" Cyo said with the blade still at his nose.

The blade vanished and Cyo relaxed.

"The less you know, the more you have to learn. I figure you have a lot of room for learning."

The man chuckled.

Cyo hissed violently. "Fine... I accept. Not like I have anything else to do." Cyo muttered while sitting on a rock. "What do you have to teach me?"

"The ways of the mind. I will teach you to think in a different way. Doesn't seem like you have been very good at thinking so far... or at least not from what I have heard."

"When do I make stuff appear?" Cyo quickly responded.

"Ah...another thing. I will teach you not to be so stupid." the man said while hitting Cyo with a rather large wooden staff.

--- For the next 3 months, Cyo rarely left the caverns for the populated lands. Instead, he learned the ways of the sometimes-forgotten Sages, the elite class of wise men, ranging from warriors to Mages. This intelligent group was wise to the ways of the universe, nature, and life in general. In no way did they follow neither Light nor Dark. They only followed their teachings that were passed down by the Sages. Most of the teachings were not known by the outside world.

--- By the time the 3 months were up and Cyo was ready to leave, he had become a new person. He felt as if that the 3 months was well spent and he had a newfound sense of importance.

"I have nothing left to teach you," said the man.

Cyo smiled.

"Take this," the man said while shifting his staff into Cyo's hands. "It's called the Darksand. My master gave it to me so I feel its only right I give it to you. Take good care of it. It's served me well."

Cyo smiled again and thanked his master.

He then proceeded to walk back toward civilization without out even a look back...
