Where were you when Tarin forged the Darkstone?
Who marked off its angles? Surely you know!
Who stretched a measuring line across it
Before the endless Void was overthrown?
Who shut the sea up behind closed doors when
It burst forth from the womb, and the clouds hemmed
It in darkness, when its limits were set
And the proud waves were told, "This is your end?"
Have you ever brought out the morning sun
Or seen where the dawn's first rays were begun,
That the Light might shine in every corner
And drive the wicked to a fleetly run?
'Twas none but Tarin, Lord of the Darkstone;
It was by His Light that these things were shown.
Do you know when roaming gazelles give birth?
Do you count the months with increasing mirth?
They crouch down and bring forth the fruits of their
Labor, which soon grow strong with ample girth.
Do you know the ways of the crocodile,
The source of his aggression and his guile?
He lies amidst the reeds, though few among
His prey suspect the nearness of his smile.
Have you sought out the secrets of the stoat
And examined every hair in his coat?
Have you witnessed as brown gives way to white
Or brown's return upon the springtime molt?
'Tis none but Tarin, Lord of the Darkstone;
It is in His mind that these things are known.
Can you make the minotaur strong and proud?
He rejoices upon the trumpet sound;
He laughs at fear, and with a flashing spear,
He charges, trampling foes upon the ground.
Can you make the troll greater than an ox?
Though hideous, his bones are tubes of bronze;
The sinews of his thighs are quite close-knit;
His limbs are sturdier than iron rods.
Can your hand reel in the ancient black beast
With a fishhook or place him on a leash?
Will he submit to your rule like a slave
Or be your pet? Are these within your reach?
'Tis none but Tarin, Lord of the Darkstone;
It is by His might that these things are done.
