It
was hours before dawn, the best time to bide and sit, playing with thoughts
of what I could or couldn't do. I decided that it was a good time see
how my cohorts in the Dawnbringers were, and so, I took that five second
walk to their clanhall. Of course, being a thief, it took far less time
than anyone could expect. I can walk through shadows faster than a ranger
through the woods at night. Before I had become bored with my surroundings,
a face became clear. But it was not a Dawnbringer, I found, instead it
was a young Knight known as Sothem.
Sothem is a fun one, if you ask one such as myself. He seemed to have
lost his way. The normal rut between townsquare and preservia which
he frequently visited was neither in front nor behind him, and so I
assume he must have been greatly confused. As to why he had wandered
my way, I cannot say. Fate seems to be a fickle mistress, and in one
stroke it deprives me of one form of prey, while in the same, rectifying
this with someone who is equally destitute.
I proceeded to look at his inventory, the items which were loosely
hanging from his body in various places for easy accessability. I noticed
some meat, he had not come unprepaired, and some other trash I could
lift from a vendor. I helped myself to his food and listened to his
tale.
"I have come from a great distance, oh humble traveler. Can you give
me direction?" I'm always up for a good laugh, and so I offered him
my services as a scout. He accepted, the terms being a mere 50 coins,
and we began our cavort back to town, which lie all to close for me,
and yet, all too close, for I had been taking advantage of his coin
purse, having located it by his removal of the small sack from his belt
to pay me.
As we travelled we spoke of many things. I did my best to find out
what he had to offer me in items, but he did not seem to be rich in
them. Only in coins could I find acquiesce from the boredom.
A few times I missed and he would declare I was a thief. However,
I covered this with good plain old excuses as to why I had touched him.
A fly was on his shoulder, I was bracing him from poisonous plants on
the path (I assure you there are such plants, if you'd only come into
the forest with me sometime?), or I wanted his attention for what I
was about to tell him. That, with some shocked expressions did nicely,
and I was at least 2,000 coins richer by the time the night's journey
had ended.
We arrived in town and to my surprise he exclaimed, "Someone's been
stealing my gold! A thief must have followed us!"
I smiled slyly, and said, "I can find any thief, but whatever you
have left in your coin purse is what I need to track down such a foe."
He boasted, "I had once 10,000 coins, but am left with these measely
five hundred. Here, please help me!"
I took the money and to his surprise, I pointed to myself. "I've found
your thief my good fool. I'd better go think of some way to punish myself!"
With that I simply removed myself from the scene, and made my way
back to the Dawnbringers clanhall. After taking Sothem through the forest
in circles all night, I figured it would be a long time before he treked
in after me.
