The
battlefield teemed with life as I charged in rage against the Black Knight.
There were three of them to be exact. It was a good fight up to this point
when one of them snuck up behind me and tripped me. All of a sudden I
heard a low song that i remembered at all times. Balls of fire shot out
at the Knights sending them slamming against the Mighty Oak Tree nearby.
I chuckled and stood up. "I could have taken them myself, Barset," I said
out loud. He came in from the trees out of hiding. "You looked like you
were having some trouble there," He replied. "I havent been myself of
the late. It could just be old age. I'm not the same as I was when I was
a young warrior." He smiled at me as we traveled back to the clanhall.
We took a break on the side of the road in the forest to rest. I quickly
kindled a fire and cooked some meat for food. We sat down and started
to talk to each other. "So I'm glad that we have another fine leader,"
I said to him. He chuckled and told me about all his plans for the future.
After he was done I smiled at him and blurted out, "Well I think thats
great but, tell me more about yourself. Any women in your life?" He
looked at me and briefly and stated, "Heh not yet, but I am still young
I'm sure there is someone for me. And well what about yourself?" "Ohh,
yes but that was long long ago. A completely different story in itself,"
I told him. He raised an eyebrow at me saying, "Really, I would be delighted
to hear about it." "It's rather long and I don't know if you'd appreciate
it your a busy man after all," I replied. "Ahh, we've got plenty of
time today," He said smiling at me. "As you wish....."
"Well I guess it began ages ago when I was first growing up in these
lands. I had recently joined the clan that you lead today the Dawnbringers.
At this time I was one of the very first as we were growing and going
through our maturing age. Well one day I was leaving the clanhall for
Phatep on an assignment. Going through the mines, I could hear faint
screams of a young woman. I followed my senses and stumbled into a foul
smelling cave covered in slime and muck everywhere. I held my nose as
I went in for it was even unplesant for an Ogre like myself. I heard
the screams growing louder and louder. I stumbled in on a strange man
with an evil aura about him. He was guarded by two dwarves, but they
did not have arms they had tentacles. At first I thought I was seeing
things but I was right they had tentacles. The man had a jerkin which
seemed to be made of some kind of skin and it was eerie just in itself.
In the corner I saw a woman who was ragged inside a cage. The guards
indeed were armed and they were making there way towards me but I could
tell they were torturing the young woman. Why I never knew and I probably
will never know. I chuckled at their challenge and I drew my weapons.
The battle took two quick slashes of my blades and it was over. The
man in the room just looked at me and made no motion. I heard the faint
moan of the woman in the cage. I ran over to the cage and freed the
woman. When I turned around I faced an army of at least 40 soldiers.
I knew this was the man's doing and I should have taken care of him
before hand. But I wondered, where all the guards had come from? With
no time to think i threw the woman over my shoulder for she was an elf
and I didn't take any problem to carrying her. I charged into battle
taking a guard right away. But there were just too many of them. They
attacked viciously and I knew i would not be able to hold. I ran for
it as fast as an ogre could ever run. I was young back then and, even
though I was an ogre, I had speed. I ran deeper and deeper into the
cave. I soon found myself knee deep in green slime. As i went down I
soon ran into an underground river. I kept running and charged strait
into the river. I could hear the cries of the guards rushing after me.
I then encountered a waterfall blocking my way. As I looked up I could
see a little niche in the waterfall, but it was a way up. I started
to climb when all of a sudden i felt a sharp pain in my left side. I
didn't have time to look down and i kept climbing up and up with all
my strength against the waterfall. I reached the ledge midway on the
waterfall and noticed it was a little passage way. I jumped inside avoiding
anything else that could possibly be hurled at me. I knew the height
was too great for any dwarf to climb.
I looked down at my side and found a long blade arrow there...blood
oozing out. I quickly braced myself and pulled out the arrow. I had
experienced plenty of pain and I was used to it. I knew i had to ignore
it for I remembered the woman. I layed her down to the side. She was
bloody all over and she was breathing very slowly. I reached into my
backpack as i remembered gathering these special roots that helped make
the healing process faster. I started to feed them slowly to her and
i was surprised to see she was strong enough to eat them. I then realized
the seriousness of my own wounds. I was covered in blood and I was starting
to feel dizzy. I started to black out but before i did i noticed at
the end of the hallway i saw another woman walking toward me. But she
was different than any mortal. Yes she seemed to glow with light and
she wore a smile upon her face. I had only seen Maedwynne a few times
in my life and i didn't realize it was her until recently in my days.
While she was walking towards us i could use my strength no longer...I
collapsed due to my loss of blood.
What seemed like a few hours later I woke up in the same exact place.
But there was something different about me. I looked around and i could
not find a trace of blood. Next to me there was the woman i had rescued.
But she was dressed and fully healed. She was beautiful. That was the
only way to describe her. She had beautiful long strands of light curled
red hair that ran down past her shoulders. I then looked at myself and
i noticed that my pain was gone and i was just fine. I could still hear
a bit of noise down below the waterfall. The guards must have left a
few people there just incase we planned on going out that way again.
I sighed and i stood out and held out my hand saying, "Hello I'm Procumerous
Baritus." I picked her up and she introduced herself to me. "Lilia is
what I am known by," she replied. I smiled seeing that she was alright.
I was fluent in the language of the elves so it was easy to communicate.
It was odd though she didn't seem to be afraid of my looks as most women
did. Because the truth is i was not the greatest looking guy in the
world." Barset started to laugh at this point. "Shh, i'm trying to tell
a story here," i snorted. He gathered himself together and patted my
back saying, "Alright continue this is a great story."
I smiled at him and began once again, "As i was saying she seemed
not to be afraid of my looks. I was surprised at first i was so used
to this reaction. We began to talk for hours at a time since we could
not leave. She had a lot better personality than i could have ever imagined.
She was also quite funny. I always pictured good looking people to think
they were better than me in every way and they looked down at me with
pity. But with Lilia it was different. She was quite kind to me. After
what seemed about 5 hours I felt my stomach growling. I knew we had
to leave soon. I stood up and told her i would be back. I stuck my head
out of the waterfall just to see an empty cavern. I looked around closely
for any sign of life. All i could see were some tracks and a deserted
campfire on the ground. I came back to Lilia and i smiled at her saying,
"Well, they are gone. Why were they after you anyways?" "Please, I do
not wish to talk about that," shy replied with watery eyes. "I'm sorry.
Its fine we dont have to talk about that. Well follow me I'll lead you
back to Windy Bluff," i replied. She stood up and she darted across
the room straight at me. She ran to me and jumped up into my arms and
did the unexpectable." I sighed a long sigh and looked stared at the
fire. "Well, what was it?" Barset asked anxiously. "For the first time
in my life, Someone kissed me."
We walked back slowly that night to windy hand in hand. It turned
out she lived alone in windy and her family lived in Erinswood. I had
been to Erinswood many times and I smiled hapily at her. I dropped her
off at her house and headed for my own bed at the clanhall. All night
i could not stop thinking about her. I saw her everyday for days. Days
led to weeks, weeks led to months. I fell in love with her. Finally
I had enough to buy her...an engagement ring. I went down to Aina and
bought a beautiful diamond studded ring. I was going to ask her to marry
me the next evening. For the first time in my life i was truly happy.
I had never felt the way i had felt around her. Life was wonderful and
beautiful. I never thought love could ever happen to me but i was ever
so wrong. I soon realized the true purpose of life in the past months.
But fate seemed to take its own course."
I stopped suddenly. I started to notice tears welling up in my eyes
and Barset was staring at me with concern. I gathered myself together
and sighed. I looked deep into the fire. "You dont have to continue
now we can do it later," Barset said to me. "No its okay just give me
a moment. I'll be fine," I told him. I chewed on a piece of meat and
swallowed it then taking a swig of water from my flask.
"That night I had a dream. An evil dream. I dreamed of a city of complete
waste and destruction. I then dreamed of a huge cliff which i hurled
myself into. I grabbed hold of a ledge only to wander deeper and deeper
into a city. Then all i could remember was a giagantic burning fire
and then someone lying on the ground. I couldnt tell who that was on
the ground. Then I saw "her" again. This was the second time I had truelly
seen her. The goddess was glowing with light and beauty. Maedwynne then
whispered to me, "She's passing."
I woke up suddenly and looked around me. I noticed that only Ayden
was in the hall at the time. He was sleeping and I didn't want to wake
him. I noticed Sandoz and Ganat were gone. That was expected they always
went on long journeys together for days at a time. But I could hear
the faint echo of the voice i heard at the end of my dream. I ran out
of the clanhall and the deep misty voice was always ahead of me. I followed
it carefully. It echoed deep and it was night time and nothing seemed
to be out and about. I stumbled into an ancient destroyed city. No life
seemed to be present. I was scared... this was the city from my dream.
I kept on going for I knew that the voice was leading me to something.
I then went down into an opening which ended up on a vine before a huge
cliff. I stood before it and a gasped. I could not make myself go any
further. Suddenly i couldnt hear the voice anymore. It was replaced
by an evil laughter which started low and slowly but increased as it
was going. I then felt cold dark hands on my back which shoved me into
the gorge. Falling down I could only take a sharp glance up enough to
see a towering figure standing at the top and just vanish into nothing.
I was looking around frantically looking for anything to save my life.
I frantically grabbed hold of the edge of the cliff which seemed like
a miracle. I was young back then and somehow i managed to hang onto
it with a firm grip and picked myself up. I then started to move when
i was hurled into a magical river completely helpless. The river then
seemed to just vanish and I was hurled down a good 10 feet.
After I gathered myself together I looked around me. It was beautiful
I had never seen a city like it. It was again deserted but there was
some magic about the place as if it had been preserved. Years later
I read about this misterious city Karim they called it. I wandered deeper
inside again i could hear the sweet voice again haunting me in the hallways.
I continued to follow it. I then reached a flight of stairs which i
climbed quickly. There was now a door in front of me but i heard from
behind me this time the voice echoing something like..."she's passing"
but it was so low and hard to pick up i wasnt sure.
I opened the door to see two priests but were they really priests.
They looked somewhat ghost like as i walked inside. They looked at me
and they were cackling insanely. "You're too late, the our master has
already got her," they spit out at me. "who are you talking about?,"
I asked fervently. They just gave me an evil looked and vanished to
thin air. Now as i looked i could see the fire. Yes it was this bright
green fire i saw in my dreams. I just stood there staring at it not
willing to believe. As if i could see into the fire i could see the
face of someone i held dear. In my own building fury i hurled myself
into the fire without even holding one thought in my head.
I looked about me and saw that i was not burining. I was confused
at first but then i came to my senses and started to look about me.
I stumbled around until i stumbled over something. I tripped and fell
and noticed all the flames seem to quell around me. As a matter of fact
the entire world seemed to disappear. All I could see was blackness.
This dark power seemed to flow through this place. This power was even
darker than i've felt around Seluctruh. I was amazed it felt as if even
immortals were left powerless in this place. This was a place where
dreams were born and dreams were lost...this was all this was nothing.
Then without warning some light opened to where i was and i saw two
figures. The first one was a gigantic massive beast standing there.
I gazed in awe at its size and strength. It growled at my entrance and
i dared not to even look at it. And thats when I saw...her,"
This time I broke down into tears starting in sobs then into an uncontrollable
fit. After a while i calmed down and Barset patted me on the back. "We
can finish this another time when your more stable my friend." Barset
said. "No, I will finish this now no more interruptions," I replied
wiping the tears from my eyes. "If you think you can, go ahead," He
said.
"I felt it deep inside all along and i feared it was the her the voice
was talking about. It was none other than my Lilia. There was blood
all about her and from the judgement of the scene i knew what happened.
I ran quickly over to her but i could not look at her too long. She
had many wounds. I knew from my experience with the dying she would
not make it this time. I knew no goddess could save her for the place
around us seemed that no god of any kind could have any power here.
I got down and i held her close with tears in my eyes. She just smiled
and me and kissed me on the cheek. I didn't want to let go. She was
the only one whoever cared for me all my life. I had never known such
joy. I realized then maybe i just didn't deserve to love maybe i just
wasnt good enough for anything. Maybe it was fate, maybe i was supposed
to be alone and thats how it was supposed to be. I never truelly understand
why it was so that my love had to be torn so violently away from me.
She whispered in my ear, "I will always love you." That was the last
thing I ever heard her said and i don't think i would have had her say
anything else to me. I knew she mean't it and at that moment, that was
the only thing that mattered. I then turned behind me at the demon before
me. From the short glimpse i took he looked somewhat familiar. He was
laughing. The same exact laugh when he was at the cliff. I knew it then.
It was a laugh of pure hatred and evil. I picked myself up off the ground
leaving Lilia. Tears were pouring out of my eyes. I glared at him, drawing
my weapons. I roared at him ferosiously. He snarled at me, daring me
to make my move. I realized it was stupid now but i still know why i
did it. I bellowed as loud as I ever had charging at him for the battle
of my life..............
I walked the long way home to the clanhall that night. I smiled as
I looked up at the stars amazed by their beauty. I went to my favorite
spot deep in the woods of erin. I had cleared out the area earlier in
my life as a kind of retreat i could go to to forget the troubles of
the world. Only this time the place was a bit different. In the middle
there was a grave that i myself buried. It was my love, Lilia, of course
no one else could it be. I smiled at her grave and kneeled down beside
it. I could feel her presence around me at the time. I would always
visit here everyday of my life i promised myself this i knew i owed
it to her. But this night as i kneeled down to the grave i felt a hand
on my shoulder. I was taken aback as i turned around to see Maedwynne.
She was smiling at me with a single tear in her eye. She didn't have
to say anything to me. I stood up and started to hug her but realized
what i was doing and stopped. Ogres usually don't hug goddesses. She
smiled at me and gave me a peck on the cheek. Thats when i noticed behind
her my leaders Sandoz, Ganat, and Ayden. They smiled at me and the 5
of us walked back to the clanhall together that night. Even though she
was gone physically I knew she was with me at all times and I'll never
forget that." I smiled at Barset.
At first he said nothing. He placed his hand upon my back and smiled.
"Tragic story Procumerous, I don't know what to say," he said. "Then
well leave it at that," I replied. I stood up and began to walk down
that path I had walked with my friends long ago. Even today I feel her
presence and I always will. Everyone learns atleast one lesson in life
and I sure had learned mine. Love is the greatest thing you can ever
recieve and you should cherish it with all your heart for you never
know what can happen. I never understood why my love was taken and i
probably never will. I kept that ring that would have been her engagment
ring forever never leaving it as a memory of her. Theres somethings
you can just never let go of in life and maybe you will experience that
one day too.
