What
can I say? I'm more of the strong, silent type. When I was a young bull,
my father had gone off to war against the advancing Katrin armies. It
had been a long war back then, and well, still is. The tides would turn
every other day (or so it seemed) so no one really ever had an advantage.
One day, all my neighbours would say to me, 'That's it, Dino, the jungle
is ours!' (Dino was what they called me when I was young, and when I first
came to Windy, that's the name I gave everyone when I introduced myself)
and the day after they'd be crying, telling me the armies are fighting
only a few miles away. Life was stressful enough at home, I didn't need
to hear about my friends that had gone off to war and how they wouldn't
be coming back. It really hit close to home when we got a letter from
the General of the Minotaur Elite Forces saying my father was KIA and
we'd never get to see him again.
That day, I lost it. I had a short chat with my mother, and I told
her that I'd be leaving the Valley, not to return for quite some time.
I had never anticipated that time being well over two centuries long.
Shortly after I left the Valley, i was nearing a city when a small gang
of katrins had jumped out of their hiding spots in the forest and attacked
me. I wasn't quite the warrior back then, and they got the best of me
quickly.. but a nearby guard must've intervened, because the last thing
I heard was clanking armor as if someone were running and shouting "PROTECT
THE INNOCENT! BANZAI!" growing louder and louder.
When I awoke, I still had the letter from the army about my father,
and a fresh, new set of clothes, a dagger, and a shield to help defend
myself in the wild. I was in an unsettling area because it was a rather
busy place, full of people from races i had never even heard of before,
idly passing by, not even taking a second glance at me. In a strange
way, I felt welcome, yet at the same time, like an outcast. I saw two
katrins and a troll coming near, so I ducked out of the way to avoid
another conflict. It seemed odd to me, to see an older looking Katrin
with silvery grey hair socializing with a troll (the other katrin seemed
to fit in fine), but I knew in my head not to cross such well-armed
foes in the middle of daylight.. not if I wanted to see my 18th birthday.
I had nothing but what I woke up with, so I asked one of the locals
where I could find some food. They told me I could either buy some from
a local shop, or hunt some deer and rabbits in the park, skin them,
and slice off a few pieces of meat. I was told it makes a hearty snack,
but I was skeptical. When I got into the park, I couldn't find any of
those animals so I took a look up higher in the tree to see if there
was anything else i might be able to supress my hunger with. When I
got further up into the tree, a large bald eagle decided I wasn't welcome
and that I should leave, if not by climbing out, then by falling out
of the tree. The eagle was overwhelming and I cried out for help, knowing
if I hadn't, I wouldn't survive. To my surprise, it was the pale-haired
katrin that had come to my aid, without a second thought. With one quick
slice, the eagle was in way over it's head in a pile of leaves on the
ground, and I was still stuck a few feet up in the tree. The katrin
man helped me out and introduced himself; 'The name's Rezyn. I'm not
much for helping minotaurs, but I got an odd feeling about you.. If
you need anymore help, don't be afraid to ask anyone... and until you
beef up a little, stay outta that tree.' he said. I nodded vigorously,
learning quickly from my mistake.
From then on, I had followed the katrin around, learning from him,
picking through what he had left behind incase there were something
useful in it that could come in handy immediately or later. I learned
much through venturing with Rezyn, getting strange looks from others
seeing a Katrin and a Minotaur roaming around together. He taught me
to hone my skills in battle against quick opponents like snakes and
overgrown birds.. to strengthen my defenses against relentless attackers,
for instance, rams.. and naturally, to annihilate my foes with the aid
of the druids in their humble little tree. I wonder if the wood has
grown over where I carved my name in the tree.. *shrug*
From that day on, we've become best of friends, strongest of allies,
and, most importantly to me, it's as if I have a brother, something
I never had back home in the Valley.. even if he is 400 years older
than I am..
