Mortal Stories

Unfortunate Occurances

Arian and Stych were lounging around in the barracks they called home talking about the old days and how fun it was to explore and find new things, but as far as they could remember, anything they needed to know about the lands, they already knew. They sat and talked for a while, when they realized that they had never actually ventured beyond the gates they passed every time they went north to Eria.

"So it is settled, then." Stych said, half suggesting they should explore an area that would be new to them.

Arian nodded in agreement with a glint of excitement in his eyes. The two of them raced down the spiral stairs in their dormitory, and went to Ernack to top up any faults in their armor, incase they should run into something with a fierce knowledge of swordplay and a burning desire for bloodshed in the broken city.

After every scratch and dent was repaired, the two set off northward towards the swamp, remembering the general location of the half-destroyed buildings in the distance.

"Over there!" Arian exclaimed, pointing to a tall stone building that wasn't all there. Stych looked over across the horizon and caught sight of what Arian was pointing at. The two warriors headed eastward towards the landmark and soon found themselves right next to a transparent figure, lighting up the clearing with it's arcs of energy continuously surrounding it. Stych had a good instinct to stay clear of anything that made his hair stand on end, and Arian wasn't in the biggest mood for getting fried.. this way. It was a unanimous decision, without even taking a vote, that the two would avoid this creature, for now.

Arian stumbled upon a trap door left open that lead down to an underground street with old buildings left empty like a ghost town. Stych and Arian had fun exploring around and trying to figure out what each building was, making up stories as to what caused the damage, joking about what may or may not have happened down there. After a bit of a walk they came across a deep chasm with a bit of a ledge running alongside of it, granting access to further areas to explore for the two... They came to a ledge where they had to climb down a vine and swing over to a ledge.. but the vine was obviously only strong enough for one at a time. They played some rock-paper-scissors to decide who'd go first, because neither of the two large warriors wanted to be the weight that would finally snap the vine.. Stych lost and he went first.

Stych climbed down the vine, adrenaline flowing through his system as if it was his lifeline and blood wasn't. He got to the bottom of the vine and swung over to the ledge, landing on his feet. He called back to Arian saying it was easy and that it wouldn't take much effort at all. Given that Stych was a minotaur and slightly bulkier than Arian was somewhat reassuring for the two that today wouldn't be the day the vine would give away. Arian grabbed the vine and climbed down, feeling the same rush Stych had just moments ago. Stych took a few steps back from the ledge to give Arian some space to land on, and just in time too because in swung Arian and stomped right down on the ledge. Stych smiled as Arian said "Nothin to i- " *CRACK!* He was interrupted.. the force of his landing had cracked the stone at his feet and part of the ledge right there had given away under him. The ground fell out and Arian swiftly tumbled down with it. Stych jumped forward and reached out to grab Arian, but was just too slow. He called out to Arian, looking over the edge of the chasm, but saw nothing. His number one had already fallen so far that even the Aura of the Battle could not provide enough light to give hint of his location. Stych stood there in shock, looking out over the ledge.

Arian had fallen, there was no sound made, just total, complete darkness. Stych called out for Arian thinking he might have landed on something by now, and praying to the gods that he had survived.. but there was no response. He grabbed a rock from the floor and threw it down the chasm, hoping to hear even the slightest noise of contact, but nothing. Stych knew in his instincts that he would never see Arian again, but he couldn't help but expect him to spring up from under the ledge and yell "Surprise!"... but not this time. This time it was real...

Stych raced back to the town of Windy Bluff, where the Barracks for the Guild of Fighters was built. He blew past the souls in the broken city, ignoring anything in his path..He went home looking for signs of Arian, thinking maybe he had called a favor of the gods and had divine help for recovery. Unfortunately, this was not the case... wherever Arian had fallen to, there was no return.. a plane of existance that even the Immortals above held no control over. He was gone, and that was it. Stych sheathed his flametongue sword, and laid the Greatsword of General Athemar beside him on the bed in the dormitory.. he could do nothing but think. Wanting to destroy everything for the life that had been taken away, but he couldn't. He sat helpless, blankly accepting the loss in silence.
