And
so it was that I found myself ducking through the long grass searching
frantically for help. Behind me trailed two rather large beasts. I’m
my mind I heard their master urge them towards me.
“Onwards my pets..ONWARDS!! Hunt down Tarin’s young Augerer
and bring me his soul!”
The hounds seemed intent on doing just that. I ran as fast as my gnomish
legs could carry me, which considering my four legged pursuers, was
no speed at all. The only thing I could do was hope to out-maneuver
them by make quick ninety degree turns that their aforementioned four
legs and speed couldn’t compensate for.
As I approached a large oak tree, I felt that my salvation was at hand.
All it would take was a leap into one of the branches and perhaps I
would have enough time to quickly regenerate my powers.
I leapt to the air to grab onto a low hanging branch, but before I
could grasp it, I felt the hard bite of steel pierce my sternum, rip
right through my body, and out through my spinal cord. I looked down
the shaft of the lance to see a menacing black knight staring at me
with hate in its eyes.
This was the end. With what I was sure would be my last breath, I muttered
a prayer to Tarin.
Considering what happened next: I’d say he answered it.
Although my consciousness was fading from the power of the killing
blow, I did manage to see what looked like a rip in the fabric of reality
open up. Two figures emerged from it. One surrounded in a shield of
ice, while the other was in one of fire.
The one with ice called out what sounded like prayer. A blinding light
hurled forth and blew the knight, who was still holding my impaled body
up on his lance, into pieces and ripped the lance free from my body.
Just before my spirit was ready to leave my body, the figure called
out yet another prayer…instantly my wounds healed, and I felt
revived.
I looked up in time just to see the Hell Hounds round the tree and
launch themselves at the figure draped in flames. She didn’t even
flinch. The first hound was reduced to a pool of liquid acid almost
before it even left the ground. As for the second, it found out that
some fires burn even deeper than the flames of hell. It yelped at it
smashed into the shield of fire and lay prone..but the figure did not
attack it. Instead she spoke:
“Go back to Vladimir. Tell him that if he chooses to hunt those
new to the realm, he will face the wrath of the Guardians!”
That was my first encounter with Kehl and Phyre, and I have been proud
to be a Guardian ever since.
