Mortal Stories

Holy Ground

The moon watched the realm from high in the dark night sky. The two vampires walked silently through the grove. A small pond was visible now in the distance, and the grass sparkled with the light of the moon. The vampires' footfalls were silent and so were they. Xodus was deep in thought, and when Seria stopped, he didn't notice. He took a few more steps before he heard a screech. Xodus darted around and was already at Seria's side before the screech was even close to being over. Seria was on the ground, she was in a fetal position with her arms over her face.

"What's going on?" asked Xodus urgently. The only answer he got from Seria were her loud uncontrollable hisses. She continued to roll side to side while she hissed. Xodus spun around and saw the pond he had noticed. In a black blur he was at the pond scooping water into his hand, and in another black blur, he was back at Seria's side. He hoped that splashing her face could jolt her and return her bearings to her. Seria quickly looked up, squinting through eyes that had tears flowing from them. She saw the water in Xodus' hand, and she screamed. Seria tried to get up but she fell back down and began crawling as she continued to scream. Xodus looked down at the water in his hand and tried to see what could be doing this to Seria. He put his head low to the water and his tongue darted out and tasted it. It was just water. Xodus quickly muttered a few words and the water in his hand lit up in flame. It wasn't more than a moment that the flames dissipated into nothingness and Xodus' hands were dry.

Xodus ran up to Seria and this time she wasn't running away, yet she was still hissing, rolling, and crawling. Xodus bent down and picked Seria up and held her, then began to sprint back to safety.

Xodus stood over the his coffin and looked down on his shivering wife. Xodus reached down and untied the strings to the cape that Seria was wearing, and slowly slid it out from under her. He folded the cape and set it on the ground, then he rested his hand on Seria's head and muttered a few words. Seria's shivers slowly faded away and she drifted into a deep sleep.

Seria woke before the night was over. Xodus was still standing next to the coffin. Seria slowly opened her eyes and looked up at Xodus. They stared at each other for a few moments, then Xodus began to speak.

"What happened?" asked Xodus in a calm curious voice. Seria stared at him for another moment then lifted her hand and moved a wisp of hair from her face.

"It was where we were." replied Seria in a tired tone.

"What was wrong there?" asked Xodus, even more curious now.

"I almost stepped onto holy ground, Xodus. That pond was filled with holy water." Xodus almost flinched at what Seria said. He only stood there with his arms crossed, thinking of what could be happening to him. He had an idea, but he didn't want to believe it. Xodus opened his mouth to say something, yet his thoughts were interrupted. Everything he was thinking about went blank and then he began to hear a voice. "You are changing Xodus. I know a way to cure you. To cure you from your curse and your hate. All you must do is ask."

Seria looked up at Xodus, she noticed that his mouth was still open. His mouth quickly shut and he began to walk out of the room. "What's going on, Xodus?" asked Seria.

"I just need to be alone." was all that Xodus said.

It always looked the same, every time Xodus had come here. His grave was always the same condition it was in when he rose from it. Xodus stopped before the hole in the ground which held him for many a year, and began to speak.

"Show yourself. Show yourself now." Xodus said. He waited for a few moments, and a powerful beam of light shot forth from the heavens and Ganat was standing next to him. The light didn't affect Xodus as he thought it would, he could look at it without pain. Xodus turned to face Ganat.

"What do you want?" asked Xodus sternly.

"You are changing, Xodus. There is a cure for your hurt," Ganat replied. Xodus didn't answer, he only stared at Ganat. "There is an elderly priest who holds the holiest of holy items. It is an amulet called the Heaven Scent. All you would need to do, Xodus, is wear it for a day. Then, then you would be normal again, you would no longer be a creature of the night." continued Ganat. Xodus stood there staring at Ganat. Slowly, Xodus felt rage built within him.

"No. Never. Never!" Xodus spun around and ran into the shadows, his yell still echoing. Xodus was scared, he felt it. He was scared of the change, he was scared of wanting the change.

Xodus awoke the next night. Everything that had been happening to him was too much to handle, he had to do anything but think, he had to get out. He walked out of his clanhall. He just walked, trying not to think. He couldn't have known where he was going, he just turned and walked and turned again in another direction.

It was almost midnight and Xodus stopped walking when he reached a clearing. He was at his grave, again. Xodus began to shake. He fell to his knees as he shook, he lowered his head and felt as though he was going to vomit. Why did he have to come here? Why wouldn't these feelings go away? Xodus began to shake more severely. Then, he saw the lights.
